Mezzanine: privacy, stairs and storage

Privacy

An open edge is great for light and air, and poor for privacy. If the mezzanine is a bedroom, sound from the kitchen or living area will reach it. A solid half-wall, a sliding panel or a door changes this a lot.

Stairs

• A straight, wide stair is easier than a steep ladder-style stair.
• Check handrail height and the gap between rails if you have children.
• Think about luggage, laundry and a bad knee.
• Ask whether there is a landing, or you step straight onto the mezzanine floor.

Storage

The space under the stair and under the mezzanine can hold shelves or a wardrobe. If the plan shows none, you will need furniture for it, and that uses area.

Heat and air

Warm air collects at the top of a tall room. Check airflow and where the cooling is. A ceiling fan on the upper level is a useful sign.

Usable space

Usable space is where you can stand and use furniture comfortably. Under a low sloping ceiling the area can be on the plan and still be hard to use.
